ROCK U. PROGRAMS & REQUIREMENTS

ROCK U. is TMC's full time rock band experience. ROCK U operates from  mid-September to early March. It features two live performances and one pizza jam night where the students get to listen to other ROCK U bands, hang out, eat pizza and jam too! Adults have a separate jam night.

ROCK U 2024-2025 is held on Monday & Thursday evenings. It is 60 min weekly for all groups.

We have the space for 8 ROCK U bands in our 2024-2025 season. Some bands are already existing groups and may not require new members; others might.

The age groups are 12-14, 15-19 and 20+ (adults). Lessons are recommended for everyone in ROCK U but not required for students who are 15+ & very self-sufficient on their instruments.

Auditions or teacher recommendations are required to join ROCK U (see requirements for each instrument below).

ROCK U is a very fast paced learning environment and it is recommended that students are not involved in multiple extra-curricular activities that may inhibit weekly rehearsal attendance, weekly preparation or concert absences.

ROCK U. REQUIREMENTS

ALL ROCK U. STUDENTS: Regular, daily practice required to learn 4-6 songs monthly. Ability to memorize parts for live performance. Expectations are for students to come prepared to each rehearsal with parts ready to play. Reading music/tab/chord charts very important.

RHYTHM GUITARISTS: High level of competency playing open, power & bar chords & the ability to switch between them effortlessly. High level of competency playing intricate rhythm patterns. Standing up to perform in rehearsal and live performance.

LEAD GUITARISTS: High level of competency with minor/major/blues scales. Ability to learn new solos weekly if required. Standing up to perform in rehearsal and live performance.

VOCALISTS: High level of competency with pitch, vocal strength, harmony singing and the ability to learn quickly without one on one instruction in class. Working with a vocal teacher is highly recommended.

DRUMMERS: High level of competency with multiple styles of drumming (rock, pop, shuffle/blues, triplets, hard rock, swing/jazz, country rock etc). Ability to keep time (no excessive slowing down or speeding up), play fills without errors, dynamics (playing softly, medium, loudly) & play with energy. Double bass & a very high level of proficiency is required for metal bands and may require a separate audition even if you're already in ROCK U.

Bass Players: Highly level of competency in playing with finger style/pick. Knowledge of the notes on the fretboard. High level of competency playing intricate rhythms. Ability to lock in with the drummer.

KEYBOARDISTS: High level of competency learning by ear or with a teacher who understands how to create parts for songs that are not available on line. Keyboardists do not just play piano; they are responsible for multiple sounds including electric piano, organ, strings, horn sections, synthesizers etc. These parts are rarely if ever available in sheet music. In that sense, it means keyboardists have one of the most difficult jobs in a band when it comes to learning their parts.
